ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine the usefulness of fat saturation fast spin-echo T2WI for patients with mild acute trauma of the spine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July 1998 and June 2002, 36 patients with acute spinal trauma underwent MRI within four months of injury. One, whose clinal symptoms indicated neurological paralysis, was excluded form our study. A superconductive 1.0-T MRI scanner was used, and conventional T1W1, T2WI, and additional fat-saturation fast spin-echo T2WI were performed. Two radiologists compared conventional T2-weighted sagittal imaging and fat-saturation T2-weighted sagittal imaging in terms of the extension of increased high signal intensities in soft tissue and vertebral bodies, bone marrow signal change, disk herniation, and signal change of the disk. RESULTS: The detection rate of focal high signal intensities in soft tissue and bone marrow was significantly higher at fat-saturation fast spin-echo T2WI than at conventional T2WI. CONCLUSION: Fat-saturation fast spin-echo T2WI is useful for the evaluation of patients with mild acute spinal trauma without neurological impairment.

ABSTRACT

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases. A rare complication occurring after its surgical treatment is the development of an aneurysm, and we report the radiologic findings in a case in which this occurred after surgical ligation.

ABSTRACT

The diagnosis of acute pancreatitis occurred in CAPD patients is quite difficult due to its clinical similarity with acute peritonitis. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis in CAPD patients may result in fatal complication. We experienced a case of acute pancreatitis in a CAPD patient. A 62 years old female visited the hospital with acute abdominal pain and cloudy effluent for 3 days. She has been on CAPD for 3 years and had two episodes of peritonitis at 6 months and 1 year before the admission. The causative organism was Streptococcus viridans in each episode. The peritonitis symptoms and peritoneal leukocyte count incresed despite of using Vancomycin(R) and Netilmicin(R). Causative organism was not isolated from dialysis. Serum amylase concentrations increased from 105mg/dL at the admission to 1,052mg/dL on day 10 of admission. Abdominal ultrasonography and abdominal computerized tomogram revealed fat infiltration, focal necrosis and multiple cyst formation at pancreas area. Computerized tomogram guided aspiration cytology revealed acute inflammation and necrosis. Bacteria were not found in the aspirate. Clinical symptoms were improved after discontinuation of CAPD and intraperitoneal use of antibiotics. The patient restarted CAPD on the day 18 and remained without complications. We report this case with a brief review of literatures.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate prevalence of intestinal helminthic infections and skin tests and Paragonimus and Clonorchis in tuberculosis(TB) patients in Korea. Stool examinations by formalin-ether technique and intradermal tests were carried out in 2 areas; Masan TB hospital and Kong-Ju TB hospital. The positive rate of intestinal helminths of any kind was 51.7 percent among 329 patients in Masan hospital, but 18.1 percent among 215 patients in Kong-Ju hospital. The infection rates of Trichocephalus trichiurus and Clonorchis sinensis were 20.7 percent and 17.6 percent respectively in Masan hospital patients, but the infection rates of T. trichiurus and C. sinensis were 6.5 percent and 6.0 percent respectively in Kong-Ju hospital patients. In skin tests, positive reactions to Paragonimus and Clonorchis antigens were 22.0 percent and 37.6 percent respectively in Masan hospital patients. On the contrary, Kong-Ju hospital patients showed the positive rates of 15.2 percent for Paragonimus and 27.2 percent for Clonorchis respectively.
